Accessory Procedures

Bone grafting-: It is recommended when jawbone is insufficient in width or height. It is a painless procedure which is performed by the dentist to maximize the benefit of an implant surgery.

Clinical applications of Bone grafting

  • Autogenous Block Bone Augmentation
  • Socket preservation
  • Sinus Lift

Types of Bone Grafts

Autogenous Bone Grafts: The grafts made from the own bone of a person are called as autogenous bonegrafts. The bone is take from hip, chin, jaw or lower leg.

Allogenic Bone Graft: The dead bone taken from a cadaver processed by freeze-dry method is called allogenic bone graft or allograft.it cannot produce new bone on its own whereas autogenous graft can.But it act as framework on which bone is formed from surrounding tissue to fill up the whole gap.

Xenogenic Bone Graft: Non-living bone from another species (usually cow) is called xenogenic bone. This bone processed at very high temperatures in order to put a stop to free from immune rejection and contamination.

Bone Graft Substitutes: There are many artificial materials which can be used as bone substitutes.Demineralized Freeze-Dried Bone Allograft(DFDBA) and Demineralized Bone Matrix (DBM).

Graft Composities: The growth factors and bone graft materials are called as graft composities. Someother combinations includes,collagen/ceramiccomposite,which is similar to natural bone composition.DBM along with bone marrow cells helps in new bone formation.

Bone Morphogenetic Protiens: the proteins that are responsible for formation and healing of the bone are called bone morphogenetic protiens. These are formed within the body The advantage of synthetic materials is they don’t require a secondary procedure of taking bone from another site, which reduces risk and pain.

Socket preservation: under this process graft is placed in a socket from where the tooth was removes. These grafts are generally made up of synthetic materials, human bone or bone of some other species. After the graft is placed in the socket,it is covered with a collagen membrane, and sutured.

DO YOU NEED IT?

It is required to avoid any kind of complications in an implant surgery.

What is a Sinus Lift?

Sinus lift is a medical condition when there lack of bone or height in the upper jaw or sinus are extremely close to the jaw.Sinus lift is quite common these days.

What Does Sinus Lift procedure do?

In this procedure, bone grafting material is filled in the lower portion of maxillary sinus, to form a thick sinus floor and implant is placed in this region.

Follow-Up

  • There are certain things that need to be followed
  • Painkillers and antibiotics are advised
  • Do not forcefully blow the nose
  • Do not sneeze
  • Saline sprays are prescribed to prevent congestion and inflammation.
  • A visit after 7 to 10 days to remove thee stitches.
  • The healing process may take months as it takes time for the grafted material to adjust with the jaw.

Autogenous Block Bone graft

For augmentation of bone the most reliable option is Autogenous bone block transfer(ABBT).It is done from the mandibular symphysis and ramus of the mandible.
